On Previous Adaptations

As part of this project, I think it's an important step to discuss previous adaptations of The Hobbit, what they included or omitted, and my thoughts about them. Mainly I think it will help in conveying my personal biases better than me trying to discuss them directly.

I will be reviewing two adaptations in this article: the 1977 Rankin/Bass animated film, and the 2012-2014 film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson (An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies).

(I am considering reviewing a third adaptation as well: an audio drama produced by The Mind's Eye in 1980. I grew up listening to these casette tapes, passed down by my mom from her childhood.)
