Introduction...

This project began sometime in the Fall of 2022. I don't actually remember what initially sprung the idea, but I know I was on a Tolkien fixation at the time, and listening to the audiobook of The Hobbit read by Robert Inglis.

Like many fans of JRR Tolkien's works, I found the Peter Jackson-directed Hobbit trilogy disappointing to say the least. Though I must admit there are quite a few aspects I find very charming in the films. Additionally, I'm certain much of my criticism of the trilogy stems from growing up with the 1977 Rankin/Bass animated film adaptation. For more thoughts on these adaptations (and others), see the page on previous adaptations.

The idea...

Disclaimer: I do not believe myself to be writing an "objectively better" adaptation of The Hobbit than previous attempts, unlike many other projects rewriting or rebooting a work of art that I've seen across the web.

This project represents my personal ideal version of what a Hobbit film adaptation would look like. As such, I plan on including my reasoning behind most decisions in this adaptation (at least the biggest changes/additions). Some of this includes snippets of screenplay drafts, all of which will be posted and available to read (in full) at some points. Of course, much of this site is written with the expectation that the audience is familiar with the published versions of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

If you haven't read them, go do so! (And if you would rather listen to an audiobook version, check there's quite a few great ones out there! I have suggestions on this page.) And while you're at it, you should watch the adaptations as well.

Unfortunately, given the nature of this project and the state of copyright law, there is absolutely no way this could ever get made into a real product. Thus, pretty much everything here is hypothetical. Unlike my Star Wars projects, I don't see much merit in translating it into comic form. The screenplay (and maybe storyboard) format seems to be the extent of this project at most. Give it another few decades for Tolkien's published works to hit the public domain and then we can talk.

Anyway, feel free to explore this project as much as you want! If you like it, feel free to share!

I have the honor to remain
Yours deeply,
